Doom creator leads speakers including Frictional Games, Steam Spy, Capsule Games and DDM at Zurich conference

John Romero to reminisce about Id Software’s beginnings at Ludicious

This year’s Ludicious game festival in Zurich will see one of gaming’s greatest creators reveal how an entire genre was birthed.

John Romero will take to the stage at the annual Switzerland-held conference at 3:30pm this Saturday, January 23rd, to discuss Id Software’s early days.

Id was founded in the early 1990s by Romero, John Carmack, Tom Hall and Adrian Carmack, and is best-known for revolutionising the first-person shooter genre with releases such as Doom, Wolfenstein and Quake.

Romero recently returned to Doom to create his first new level for the gory shooter in more than two decades, releasing his reimagining of boss stage E1M8 for free.

In 2014, Romero began a new shooter project under a new studio named Romero Games with his wife Brenda Romero, who will also be at Ludicious, helping to judge the show’s student competition.

Other speakers at the four-day event will include Thomas Grip, the creative director of Amnesia and Soma developer Frictional Games; Sergey Galyonkin, the creator of online stat-tracking service Steam Spy; and Digital Development Management (DDM) founder Jeff Hilbert.

Meanwhile, workshops will be held by animator and designer Lea Schonfelder, who will reveal how to make a game in one hour, and Capsule Games designer Andreas Halter, who will host a Mario Maker Workshop.
