Tropico publisher opens mobile division to bring existing and new IP to iOS and Android

Kalypso Media establishes mobile game division

Kalypso Media, the German publisher behind Tropico, has opened a new mobile division.

PC games has been its mainstay, but in light of the titanic shift portable gaming, the new arm, known as Kalypso Media Mobile, based in Berlin, will now focus on creating mobile titles for iOS and Android platforms.

“Kalypso has a lot of great IP, such as Tropico, Dungeons and Port Royale, within its portfolio and it is really about time to follow the trends of cross-platform entertainment and cloud gaming,” said Kalyso global managing director Simon Hellwig.

“Strategy and simulation games are especially under represented – specifically within the premium price segment – at the moment. This is a fast-growing market and we think our games and brands deserve to become playable anywhere, any time.”

At least three games are scheduled to be released this year, the first of which is due to be unveiled soon.

The studio’s global managing director Stefan Marcinek added: “We are, of course, looking to port and/or re-design our own IP for mobile platforms such as tablets and smartphones, but we will also release new and innovative games and concepts that fit perfectly on these devices”

Tropico is Kalypso’s best-known game series. The strategy series started life on the PC, but has also been released on Xbox 360, with PS4 to follow. Its fifth instalment is due out next month, and it may well be first in line for a mobile iteration.
