Lara Croft film reboot in the works

Developer Crystal Dynamics is working with GK Films on a film reboot of the Lara Croft franchise.

The news, of course, follows today’s release of Lara Croft’s gaming reboot Tomb Raider.

To date two Tomb Raider films have been made, but the weak commercial and critical performance of the second – Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life – seemed to have killed the series.

Variety reports that this new film deal has only been made possible thanks to GK’s agreement to work collaboratively with Crystal Dynamics, which insisted on maintaining an element of creative control in the project.

It’s a good partnership. We’re seeing the challenges through the same lens,” Crystal Dynamics studio head Darrell Gallagher stated. It was important for both of us to have a cohesive version of the franchise. We didn’t want to see a film version that was a continuation of the old Tomb Raider films.”
