Laser Kittenz has tabled a last minute bid for two EU LCS slots, entering their bids on the last available day.
According to a report from Dot Esports, Laser Kittenz launched as an Overwatch team in March this year, led by ex-Misfits manager ‘Alicus’ Saba. The team are bidding for slots that were taken by both Fnatic’s and Misfits’ academy teams, as new Riot rules on sister teams playing in the same league in the LCS mean both parent organisations need to sell before the start of the next split.
Riot Games reserve the right to approve all team owners in their leagues, with owners having to be vetted before they can try to buy an open slot. Saba was vetted and approved just in time to be considered as a buyer in the league according to Dot Esports. He’s not inexperienced in the League of Legends scene, as he took over the funding of failed Martin Shkreli team Ex Nihilo in 2015 after Shkreli left the team in the lurch with thousands in unpaid bills. Then he worked with Renegades and Misfits before launching Laser Kittenz in Overwatch.
The cost of these slots is currently unknown, although the rumoured price seems to be sitting somewhere around £500,000, a little lower than previous LCS buy-ins, but potentially a little cheaper due to the fact that the two teams have to sell.
We’ll find out the two organisations getting their hands on Misfits’ and Fnatic’s slots in the new few days. We’ll also see any last minute transfers, what with Riot’s roster lock occuring next week.
The Summer Split kicks off on June 1.
