League of Legends World Championship to take place in China

Riot has announced that it will hold the 2017 League of Legends World Championships in China, while the Mid Season Invitational will take place in Brazil.

The Mid Season Invitational will take place in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro between April 28th and May 21st. The tournament will be expanded to 13 teams, with the winner of the spring split or split 1 from each region heading to Brazil. This means that Brazil, China, Commonwealth of Independent States, Europe, Japan, Korea, Latin America – North, Latin America – South, North America, Oceania, Southeast Asia, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau and Turkey will all have a team at MSI.

Worlds will be taking place in China for the first time. Between September 23rd and November 4th 24 teams will head to China, with a new play in stage giving fringe regions a chance of playing more matches.

The play in stage will feature one team from each region except Korea, because you know all Korean teams would win it anyway. The 12 teams will be sorted into four groups of three, with the top two from each group proceeding into the second stage. The eight teams will then be matched against each other, with the first in the group playing second from another. The winner of each of these four matches will make it to the normal group stage, where it will be business as usual from there on out.

The Worlds final will take place on November 4th at the Beijing National Stadium, also known as the Bird’s Nest.
