The website is not the only thing that’s new around here

Letter from the Editor: A new era for Develop

In fact, there are a lot of changes happening here at Develop. I hate to use the word ‘exciting’ because it feels like PR hype sometimes, but in this case it’s apt.

This week’s site relaunch not only makes your online Develop experience much easier – no matter what device you’re reading this on – it also marks the beginning of a new era for Develop as a whole.

As you may have heard, long-running editor Will Freeman has vacated the big chair to become our contributing editor while he explores various freelance opportunities.

In his stead, I’ll be taking responsibility for the running of the mag and hopefully building on the great work Will has done. I’ve admired the Develop team from afar (well, across the office) for a long time, and I’m genuinely pleased to be working with them.

I’m particularly pleased for our new deputy editor Craig Chapple, who has done some fantastic work with Develop’s previous website over the last year or so.

We also have a new issue available now, which includes a fascinating look inside the studio behind this year’s biggest game, Rockstar North. This eight-page magnum opus – part one of which is now available to read online – explores the process behind creating the phenomenon that is Grand Theft Auto V, a title that raises the bar for any developer.

Also in our October issue is a tribute to the already-missed British development icon Blitz Studios, insights from one of the first studios making games for Google Glass and a visit to Aardman Animations’ little-known games development department.

Not enough new for you? We’re always looking to improve both the website and the magazine, so no doubt we’ll be toying around with a few ideas behind the scenes. Got any suggestions? Feel free to contact me via James.Batchelor@intentmedia.co.uk, or by calling 01992 515303.

I’m looking forward to meeting and working closer with all of you, and continuing to provide you with the ultimate resource for the games development industry.

It all starts here.
