Limbo, the widely acclaimed digital adventure game, has surpassed one million sales in just over a year, the game’s creators have said.
And the commercial success of the project has allowed Danish studio Playdead to buy back more equity from external investors.
“With the success that Limbo has achieved, we felt this was the ideal time to fully regain our independence,” said Playdead CEO Dino Patti (pictured).
It is still not known if Playdead owns the entirety of its company or if there are still some investment groups holding on to their shares. Patti previously indicated that the buy-back price for its equity had been alarmingly high in some cases.
Limbo debuted on Xbox Live Arcade in the summer last year. Having honoured its year-long exclusivity agreement with Microsoft, the company ported the game onto Sony’s PlayStation Network a year later. The title is also available on PC, with a Mac edition arriving soon.
The million downloads milestone was driven by sales across 153 different countries in nine different languages.
“We are grateful to everyone who supported us over the past few years, and look forward to forging new partnerships that will give our creative director, Arnt Jensen, room to grow creatively,” Patti added.
Playdead’s next title is to be built with the Unity Engine, though it is not believed the project will launch before 2013.
