Mexican football club teases esports reveal

Mexican Soccer Team Club América has teased an esports reveal on social media, suggesting that they’ll be the first Mexican soccer outfit to take the plunge into digital sports.

They’re got the space for it. Estadio Azteca, where the club plays, is one of the biggest stadiums in the world with 87,000 seats and over the last 100 years of football, they’ve never been relegated to the second division, lifting the league title 12 times. They’re the most popular club in Mexico.

The team haven’t mentioned what esport they’ll be getting involved with, but it’s most likely to be FIFA or PES, with FIFA being a common first step for football teams looking to embrace the online world. We’ll find out more when they announce further details, for now, there’s just this tweet and the vague promise. However, with a big stadium and a solid fanbase, the news that Mexico’s football teams are getting involved in esports is a big positive.
