Michael Fassbender to co-produce and star-in Assassin’s Creed film

X-Men and Prometheus star Michael Fassbender is to both co-produce and star in the first movie adaptation of Assassin’s Creed.

Variety reports that the Hollywood favourite, whose film credits include Shame and Haywire, will work in tandem with Conor McCaughan.

The plot of the film is said to revolve around a man who learns his ancestors were trained assassins after he is kidnapped by a secret org with ties to the Knights Templar, and sent back in time to retrieve historical artefacts” according to the site.

Ubisoft was said to at one stage have been in negotiations with Sony over an AC film series.

However, the developer has instead chosen to develop the film independently of third parties so as to maintain a greater level of creative control – a decision spurred on by the flop of Disney’s Jerry Bruckheimer production of Prince of Persia: The Sand of Time.

"Michael Fassbender was our first choice to play the franchise’s iconic hooded hero,” Ubisoft Motion Pictures CEO Jean-Julien Baronnet stated. "Michael is an extremely smart, talented, versatile and committed actor."
