Microsoft has opened the application process for a new 12-week accelerator programme it has conceived to help technology and gaming start-ups in the UK.
The accelerator will offer successful applicants focusing on cloud, internet, mobile or gaming projects mentoring, technical assistance and access to start-up targeted resources.
It is delivered as part of the global Microsoft Ventures initiative, which serves to partner with start-ups numerous ways, including 10 accelerators across the world, of which the London programme is one.
“If you’re a technology or gaming start-up with a great team, a great idea and an unfaltering belief in what you do, you are the perfect candidate for the Microsoft Ventures Accelerator in London,” stated Anand Krishnan, general manager of Microsoft’s Developer and Platform Group. “Microsoft is committed to helping startups grow their business by providing access to our ecosystem of partners and routes-to-market.”
Initially based in London’s East End tech hub at the Central Working facility in Shoreditch (pictured), the programme will let successful applicants work with companies across the gaming, technology and related service industry spheres, including Microsoft’s own Lift London and Lionhead, and the likes of financing experts and legal specialists. The programme also has the backing of UK games sector trade bodies TIGA and Ukie.
“TIGA is focused on supporting games developers to build sustainable and successful studios and so I am delighted that TIGA is working with Microsoft on the Tech City Accelerator start-up programme," said TIGA CEO Richard Wilson. "Turning a start-up into a promising business is a challenge. TIGA’s research shows that at least 21 per cent of start-ups in 2010-2012 have already gone under.
“Too many start-ups close down because they lack finance, commercial skills and quality business advice. If the next wave of indie developers is to climb the ladder of commercial success then we need to lend a helping hand. Microsoft’s Tech City Accelerator does precisely this by providing mentoring, technology and tools to start-ups, thereby enabling studios to speed up the publication of their games and enhance their ability to raise investment.”
