Minecraft + Tim Burton = Don’t Starve

Want to know what’s hot in gaming right now? Surviving, that’s what.

Whether you’re talking about existing hit Minecraft, emerging underground mod title DayZ or the upcoming zombie-survive-a-thon The War Z, plonking gamers in the middle of nowhere and telling them to deal with it is very much ‘the thing’.

So the new project from Shank developer Klei Entertainment should come as no surprise.

Called Don’t Starve, the game’s most immediate influence in Minecraft. But unlike the dozens of iOS and Xbox Live clones that have directly mirrored Notch’s blocking visual aesthetic, Klei’s title is taking an altogether different approach.

Instead, what we have is something that looks (and sounds) more akin to the dark, gothic stylings of a Tim Burton film

Don’t Starve is an uncompromising wilderness survival game full of science and magic,” the studio explains.

You play as Wilson, an intrepid Gentleman Scientist who has been trapped by a demon and transported to a mysterious wilderness world. Wilson must learn to exploit his environment and its inhabitants if he ever hopes to escape and find his way back home.”

The game doesn’t have a release date yet but potential players are currently able to register for the early access beta.
