Valve adds fully customisable Team Fortress 2 models to animation tech

Mixamo’s character creator Fuse comes to Steam

Mixamo has brought its new character creator tool suite Fuse to Steam.

The tech includes 3D modelling, texturing and rigging features, and enables developers to browse, resize, customer and combine body parts, textures, materials, clothing and accessories on 3D characters.

The tool suite provides hundreds of royalty-free 3D characters and ready-made assets, as well as extra paid-for content.

Mixamo has pledged to continue adding regular DLC to the tool, and will also encourage users to submit their own assets which can be shared with other developers.

The character animation firm is offering a special 50 per cent discount on the tools to celebrate the launch, at a cost of £37.99. This will include 64 body parts, clothing items and 25 smart textures. Valve has also made a number of its Team Fortress 2 character models available with the tool, such as the Spy, Sniper and Scout, which can be fully customised and animated.

A demo version of Fuse Basic is also available for developers to test out for free.

“Mixamo’s mission is to democratize 3D character art,” said Mixamo CEO Stefano Corazza.

“Today we’re excited to team up with Steam, bringing the latest technology for 3D character modeling to millions of users and making high-quality 3D character art accessible to anyone. Enabling users to add their own content to the asset collection is one of the features that keeps Fuse so unique, versatile, and always relevant. We can’t wait to see what users will create!”

Valve’s Mark Richardson added: “The Steam community has always been extremely creative. As more and more people want to create compelling 3D and game content, there is an increasing need for new tools that are easy to use and that enable users to share assets and collaborate on their projects. Fuse is a great example of how to offer all that while also delivering high-quality assets.”
