Mojang doesn’t want companies to use Minecraft as a marketing tool

Minecraft creator Mojang has laid out a new set of rules designed to clamp down on the commercial use of Minecraft servers for advertising.

Essentially the rules prohibit companies, charities, ad agencies or politicians from making mods or running servers designed to promote products that are not related to Minecraft. Fans are still allowed to build stuff replicating things they like, so long as the promotion itself is not the central thrust.

The number of Minecraft players has grown massively over the past few years. In fact, it’s now so big that Minecraft has become a viable place for companies to advertise unrelated products or for organizations to promote their causes,” the developer said.

We want to empower our community to make money from their creativity, but we’re not happy when the selling of an unrelated product becomes the purpose of a Minecraft mod or server. That doesn’t feel right, or more importantly, fun. The new rules are an attempt to stop these things from happening.”

Majong added that the changes won’t affect the usual server and video monetisation – this is a completely unrelated thing”.
