But Bethesda can still appeal court decision

Mojang wins interim injunction in Scrolls case [Update]

Mojang Specifications has won an interim injunction in its court battle with Bethesda over its upcoming title Scrolls.

“We won the interim injunction! We can keep using the name ‘Scrolls’,” said Markus ‘notch’ Persson on twitter.

“ZeniMax/Bethesda can still appeal the ruling, but I’m very happy.”

Persson first received a cease and desist letter from Bethesda’s lawyers in August, which claimed Mojang’s upcoming title Scrolls infringes on The Elder Scrolls trademark.

It remains to be seen whether the Skyrim studio will appeal against the decision.

[Update: Daniel ‘Kappische’ Kaplan has released an English summary of the Scrolls court verdict.

The court’s overall assessment “does not consider there to be shown probable grounds for trademark infringement”, given the confusion between the two titles “is relatively low”.

The verdict states the decision can be appealed within three weeks.]
