Mortal Kombat universe gets its first ever gay character

The cinematic director at developer NetherRealm has (somewhat ambiguously) appeared to confirm rumours that Mortal Kombat X has introduced the first ever gay character to the series.

The character in question is new fighter Kung Jin, a Shaolin Monk, the origins of which are explored in one of the game’s cinematics.

I see people are picking up on the subtle exposition contained in Kung Jin’s flashback,” Dominic Cianciolo said on Twitter, presumably to online chatter concerning Jin’s sexuality. Glad we have observant fans.”

The exposition itself, which can be seen in a video on Kotaku, offers some background on Jin’s origins. Series regular Raiden tells Jin: They care about only what is in your heart, not whom your heart desires.”

Earlier in the clip Jin expresses concern that they won’t accept” him, following Raiden’s observation that Self-loathing has always been an unfortunate part of your make-up.”

Mortal Kombat X was released on PS4, Xbox One and PC earlier this week.
