Mortal Kombat X launches with $50+ of microtransactions, including ‘Easy Fatalities’

Players of Mortal Kombat are able to buy simplified versions of the game’s iconic fatalities via the title’s in-game store.

IGN reports that the game arrived yesterday with a number of optional purchases including the $29.99 Kombat Pack, which unlocks four additional characters including The Predator and Friday the 13th’s Jason Vorhees, as well as two other characters – Goro ($4.99) and Blue Steel Sub Zero ($1.99).

There’s also the option of unlocking all the items available in the Krypt for $19.99.

What has raised the most eyebrows, however, is the option of buying ‘Easy Fatalities’. These allow players to execute the game’s signature moves via an easier button combo than would otherwise be required. These are available in bundles of five or 30 priced at $0.99 and $4.99 respectively.

It’s important to note that all Krypt items can be earned in-game without the need to buy. Plus, Fatalities aren’t a finishing move and are accessed after a fight is already won, so it is no way a pay-to-win” mechanic.

These sorts of launch microtransactions are becoming relatively common with premium console game. And many go far further than we see here. Both battlefield 3 and 4, for instance, offered ‘Shortcut Kits’ as DLC that offered instant unlocks to many weapons unlocks.
