Daily advice on job hunting from the industry's top companies. Today: tips from Euphonious on getting promoted in audio

NEW YEAR, NEW JOB: Euphonious’ advice for audio pros

Every day in January we’re helping job-hunters and employers with advice and tips from the industry’s finest developers, experts, HR and recruitment execs on a range of topics.

Today we bring you guidance on getting promoted as a game audio professional with essential tips from Raymond Usher, founder of audio outsourcing company Euphonious.

Euphonious’ tips for getting promoted as a games audio professional

• Producing great audio assets is pointless without great implementation. Try to get a deeper understanding of the implementation process and if possible invest in yourself and learn how to program. You don’t need to be the best coder in the world, but being able to understand what’s going on under the hood and being able to create and adjust the necessary audio logic will make sure that your skills are in demand as there is a worldwide shortage of audio programmers.

• Be proactive in engaging with the rest of the team. Not only do you keep up to date with and help shape what’s happening at that moment, but by simply being there you become an integral part of the team and get them thinking about sound which ultimately will improve the overall results, and your career prospects.

• Consider specialising in a particular area (whilst also retaining an overall understanding of game audio). Example areas include recording specialist (for example, vehicle record), game mixing, physical modelling synthesis, etcetera.

Our daily ‘New Year, New Jobs’ series of articles are extracted from the forthcoming February issue of Develop magazine, which boasts an essential compendium of advice, tips and tricks on getting a new job and improving your employment prospects. The same issue will bring you all the results from our sweeping games industry Salary Survey. Check back with Develop Online every day this month for more.
