3DS going widescreen?

Pictures emerging from the US Federal Communications Commission are reportedly of a test version of the new 3DS handheld from Nintendo.

The submission, which includes a picture of the kit, is for wi-fi testing purposes.

Though there’s nothing to directly suggest that the filing isn’t related to the current DS, as Digital Foundry points out, the screen arrangement on the circuit board is highly unusual and – if indeed it is the 3DS – seems to confirm that the device will boast a 16:10 ratio widescreen display paired with a regular 4:3 display.

Furthermore, it also looks as if the machine’s 3D functions will be restricted to the top widescreen only.

Also present and correct is an SD cart slot and a DS cartridge port, quelling concerns that the machine could mirror the PSPgo and become digital only.
