3DS sparks industry creativity

The UK games industry has been getting creative ahead of next week’s 3DS launch.

Accessory manufacturers and magazine publishers are all preparing novelty products to coincide with Nintendo’s new handheld.

Exspect has produced a Nintendo 3DS Crystal Case that comes bundled with two Joystick Junkies lenticular 3D artwork prints.

Similarly, Impact Global Solutions is promoting its Game On range of officially licensed Star Wars 3DS cases, which boasts stereoscopic 3D printed panels with iconic characters from the films such as Darth Vader and Yoda.

On top of this, consumer magazine GamesTM is launching a special 3DS edition on March 17th that boasts augmented reality features. iPhone and Android owners can download a free app that allows them to view a 3D moving avatar of Street Fighter’s Ryu on the cover.

The 3DS will be introducing many to augmented reality for the first time, and this treatment seemed so apt that we just had to make it happen,” GamesTM’s editor-in-chief Rick Porter told MCV.

There is always a buzz when attempting something of this scale – especially when we’re doing so to celebrate a big hardware launch in this fashion.

No other video game magazine has done anything like this before, so we knew that it would be hard work, but now, having seen the finished product, it was certainly worth the effort.

I easily rank this as one of the best covers we’ve ever done on GamesTM.”

Meanwhile, the latest issue of Official Nintendo Magazine features a lenticular 3D cover to celebrate the 3DS launch.

The hotly anticipated Nintendo 3DS arrives in the UK on March 25th.
