505 Games: Lack of boxed SKU is hurting Terraria sales

Publisher 505 Games is releasing digital hit Terraria in a box because it’s missing out on sales.

The 2011 PC action construction game was launched on PSN and XBLA via 505 Games this year.

It has sold over 2m copies, but now 505 is releasing the game in a box to boost sales in retail-centric markets.

Different territories have different digital acceptance,” said head of global brand Tim Woodley. We’re releasing Terraria in a box in September as we think the lack of digital uptake in France, Germany, Italy etc is prohibiting sales. Terraria has done incredibly via digital, but most of the numbers are from the US.

The game has done 110,000 in Japan. But in Japan we put it in a box, and most of those units were retail sales. We think the same thing is happening in mainland Europe.”
