Amazon announces air drone parcel delivery service

Online retailer Amazon is hatching a plan to deliver orders to your home using automated flying drones.

No, really!

As detailed in the video below, the idea is that orders can be with buyers in around 30 minutes. In fact, the only thing holding the Prime Air initiative back is the required approval from America’s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

One day, Prime Air vehicles will be as normal as seeing mail trucks on the road today,” Amazon said. It looks like science fiction, but it’s real. From a technology point of view, we’ll be ready to enter commercial operations as soon as the necessary regulations are in place.

Putting Prime Air into commercial use will take some number of years as we advance the technology and wait for the necessary FAA rules and regulations. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is actively working on rules for unmanned aerial vehicles. We hope the FAA’s rules will be in place as early as sometime in 2015. We will be ready at that time.

The FAA is actively working on rules and an approach for unmanned aerial vehicles that will prioritize public safety. Safety will be our top priority, and our vehicles will be built with multiple redundancies and designed to commercial aviation standards.”

Safety is one concern, certainly, but what about hijackings? Are people going to be shooting these things out of the sky to steal their bounties? Will delivery time be weather dependent? And what if you haven’t got a conveniently spacious garden for landing?
