Amazon is reportedly readying Android-powered hardware for release in March, though details are fuzzy on what entertainment medium will be the focus.
Recode cites multiple sources claiming the console or set-top box would pack access to Amazon’s full library of licensed and/or produced video content, along with other television-focused apps. Sources state that the box will run on some version of Android, though the exact OS is unknown at this point.
It’s also been suggested that Amazon’s product will be priced below $300 and may fall closer to the console side, like Ouya – with Ars Technica pointing out that Amazon’s recent purchase of a games studio could potentially be for creating first-party titles on the hardware.
Amazon has been rumoured to be working on a set-top box of some kind ever since an April 2013 report claimed the company was working on a product similar to Apple TV. Murmurs resurfaced last October, when it was reported that the box was due out for the holidays – but November and December went by with no such release.
