Artplant creates Game of Thrones MMO

BigPoint has announced an upcoming Massive Multiplayer Online RPG based on the popular HBO-series Game of Thrones, with Norwegian studio Artplant on development duties.

Artplant, best known in Norway for various games for children based on popular television shows, has expanded heavily in the last two years, and broke through internationally with Battlestar Galactica Online last year.

The web-based MMO, based on the science-fiction series with the same name, was published by BigPoint and has 7.5 million registered players.

"Our goal is to be one of the worlds leading developers of 3D MMO browserbased games, and this announcement is a clear indication that we’re on our way to reaching this ambitious goal", said Artplant-founder and executive producer Jack Wulff.

The game’s producer is Jrgen Tharaldsen who recently left Funcom, where he worked on titles like Anarchy Online and Age of Conan.

"As a fan of fantasy it’s a dream come true to be working with Game of Thrones, and there’s hardly any other fantasylicense in the world with a bigger potential", Tharaldsen added.

A different game, based on the Game of Thrones book series, is already under development by french studio Cyanide. The show has run for one season on HBO, and the second season premieres April 1st.

More info about the game, tentatively titled Game of Thrones: Fantasy MMORPG, can be found here.
