DeNA reports record revenues for Q2 2012

Japanese mobile gaming giant DeNA generated $609m in revenues during Q2 2012.

The company reports that’s a 37 per cent increase when compared to the same period last year and the highest quarterly revenue it has ever achieved.

Operating profit for the three months ended June 30th came in at $235m, a year-on-year increase of 22 per cent.

A whopping $689m was spent on DeNA’s mobile currency Moba-coin – another record for the firm and a particularly impressive achievement given new regulatory concerns over the ‘complete gacha’ mechanic.

‘Complete gacha’ games mean players can win rare virtual prizes after purchasing enough in-game items. Japan’s Consumer Affairs Agency has ruled that this is an illegal sales method, according to The Daily Yomiuri.

DeNA has since removed this aspect from its games, and observes that spending on Moba-coin has still continued to increase.

Key titles included Rage of Bahamut, which topped the iOS and Android top-grossing charts in the US, and racked up 17 consecutive weeks at the top of the US’ Google Play top-grossing chart.

Other hits include Blood Brothers and Ninja Royale.

"Our first financial quarter of the year marked our highest global revenue to date, as well as proof positive that we are beginning to see a thriving business in the West," said DeNA CEO and president Isao Moriyasu.

"We are squarely focused on our goal of building the world’s top social games platform.

"We will achieve this by continuing to refine our technology, building the strongest game portfolio through internal studios as well as third-parties and great IP partners, and serving our customers through our platform worldwide."

DeNA plans to invest further in games that match Western tastes and expanding its online platform in the US and other Western markets.
