Mad Max gets September release date, PS3 and Xbox 360 versions cancelled

Avalanche’s take on the Mad Max series has been dated for this September.

The PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC and SteamOS versions of the game will be hitting stores on September 4th.

And according to Game Informer, the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 editions have been cancelled, a move that "has allowed the team to deliver stunning vistas and effects that will challenge your expectations of what the Wasteland might look like".

It seems that Warner Bros has opted to not release the game alongside this year’s Mad Max film, Fury Road, which comes out this May.

Of course, this September release window also pits Mad Max up against Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, which launches on September 1st.

Mad Max was originally set to come out in 2014, but was pushed back to 2015 last April.

UPDATE: Warner Bros has sent MCV the following statement about Mad Max no longer coming to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360:

"To ensure players get the bestMad Maxexperience possible, Avalanche Studios is focused 100 per cent on developing the game for PS4, Xbox One and PC. This has allowed the studio to maximize the potential of those platforms and stay true to the core vision ofMad Max."
