It also boosted sales of Nintendo’s Wii U by 666 per cent week-on-week. It only made it to the No.2 spot in this week’s charts, being beaten by Ubisoft’s Watch Dogs.

In total the Mario Kart series has sold 101.3m units to date.

"Such positive early feedback for Mario Kart 8 reinforces the great gameplay experiences that Wii U currently offers," said Nintendo of Europe president Satoru Shibata.

"With Nintendo set to showcase its future releases at E3 next week, this is a great milestone going into the summer season
