Microsoft opens door for devs to port iOS and Android apps to Windows

Microsoft has extended an open invitation to mobile developers to port iOS and Android apps to Windows and sell them via the Windows Store.

Gamasutra reports on the announcement at Microsoft’s Build developer conference, currently taking place in San Francisco.

The firm is introducing new software development kits designed to allow developers to port their work with minimal code modifications.”

"The theme is to start with your current code base, and then extend," Microsoft executive Terry Myerson told ZDNet. "We want to embrace devs where they are."

In support of that theme, Microsoft is rolling out an Objective-C compiler that iOS developers can use to rebuild their games to run on Windows 10 Mobile – while also designing its upcoming mobile OS to support Android Open Source.

As Microsoft has indicated in previous Windows 10 reveals, The Windows Store will be redesigned as a "single unified experience for Windows 10 customers across devices.”

According to the company, that means Windows Store apps will automatically adjust themselves to different supported platforms. iOS and Android developers who use the new porting toolsets will also be able to integrate features like Xbox Live into the Windows version of their games.
