Microsoft: ‘We expect this to be a special E3’

Promises, promises.

Microsoft has in its official statement on May’s NPD stats on the North American games market suggested that its E3 press conference on Monday night will be one not to miss.

"In May 2016, gaming hours on Xbox One more than doubled compared to last year, driven by the launches of Overwatch and Doom as well as the addition of Call of Duty: Black Ops to the catalogue of Xbox 360 titles playable on Xbox One,” corporate vice president of Xbox Marketing Mike Nichols said.

Minecraft also hit a significant milestone with total sales to-date surpassing 106m and an average monthly unique player rate of more than 40m across all platforms.

We are just days away from E3 2016 and we’re excited to share more details on what Xbox fans can expect this year and beyond. We expect this to be a special E3."

What will make it special? From Microsoft’s perspective it seems likely that we will see a minimum of two new consoles.

The first, the Xbox One Slim, which is rumoured to be 40 per cent smaller than the current machine (making it the smallest Xbox ever made), pack a 2TB HDD and offer 4K video streaming. The second will be the big one however – Microsoft’s upgraded Xbox One, currently codenamed the Xbox Scorpio.

There could even be one or two Xbox streaming devices, too.

On top of this we’ll also be getting a new PS4, currently under the codename PS4 Neo.
