As expected, two new high-end PC graphics cards have been unveiled by Nvidia.
Called the GTX 980 and GTX 970, both cards offer improved TDP efficiency but still offer the sort of graphical clout that puts the PS4 and Xbox One to shame.
The GTX 980 will retail at around 429. It packs 5.2bn transistors, 2048 CUDA cores and 256-bit memory interface – a lot less than the 7.1bn transistors, 2880 cores and 384-bit bus found in the previous front-runner the GTX 780Ti – but is clocked at an impressive 1126MHz. The 780Ti managed just 875MHz.
Performance wise, the 980 offers typical gain of betwen 10-30 per cent over the 780Ti that it replaces, while consuming far less power. All in all it’s fair to say we have a new market leader.
It also packs 4GB of GDDR5 video ram and runs at just 165w TDP, as well as offering a number of new graphics techniques for developers, all of which results in a new market-leading standard.
The GTX 970, meanwhile, will cost in the region of 259, and only performs around 10-20 per cent slower. It runs at 1050MHz, offers 4GB of VRAM and offers a TDP of just 145w.
