Nvidia reveals new 4K Android microconsole Shield

Nvidia has unveiled the latest entry in its line of Shield products.

Simply called ‘Shield’, Nvidia’s new device is a new Android-powered set-top TV box powered by the company’s Tegra X1. The hardware supports 4K content, and can stream content via Nvidia’s new Grid streaming service.

Nvidia describes Grid as ‘Netflix for games’ and will stream titles at 1080p and 60 frames per second.

In addition, over 50 titles have been optimised for the Shield, including Crysis 3 and Doom 3: BFG Edition, while a number of triple-A games including Batman: Arkham Origins and Metro Last Light will be able to be streamed.

The Shield will be available in May and is priced at $199 with a controller.

Shield will change the way we enjoy digital entertainment at home,” said Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang.

It’s an incredibly powerful, efficient and advanced living room entertainment device. It’s the best Android TV experience. And it can transform into a serious gaming machine. It’s made to game.”

Piers Harding-Rolls, head of games analysis at IHS Technology, commented on Nvidia’s new hardware: "At $200 for the launch version, the device is priced well above other streaming players, but has the advantage of being future-proofed for 4K streaming services and is also a very capable games machine which includes a game controller.

"The price point is attractive compared to both Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Sony’s PS3 although with a much more limited catalogue of games. IHS believes the company should push the gaming message as much as possible to underline its price-point value.”
