PlayStation Vita sales at 1.8m

1.8m. That’s how many PlayStation Vita units has been sold by Sony worldwide as of March 31st 2012.

Vita was launched on Dec 17th in Japan and Feb 22nd in Europe and the US.

Sony describes the numbers as a good start”. Indeed, quarterly sales of 1.8m seems relatively competitive in the current environment and compares reasonably well with 3DS’ 2m unit sales in the January-March quarter of this year.

Of course, those numbers come after 3DS had been on the market for year.

The company had previously announced unit sales of 1.2m at the end of February, meaning that the machine sold 600k in March.

It also suggests that Vita is doing very well in the US.

Sony’s handheld is routinely selling fewer than 10,000 units a week in Japan. This is ahead of the weekly UK numbers, though that isn’t necessarily indicative of the rest of Europe – indeed, in territories such as Russia Vita is doing very well.

Sony has gone on to predict that combined Vita and PSP sales will reach 16m this current financial year. Vita will certainly have to increase its sales if it wants to hit this goal – that’s a realistic ambition once new titles for the machine finally start hitting shelves.
