Potential Final Fantasy 15 PC release could feature exclusive mods and user-generated quests, says Tabata

Hajime Tabata has once again expressed great interest in potentially bringing Final Fantasy XV to PC. Speaking to Famitsu (as translated by Gematsu), Tabata said he was keen to bring the game to PC so he could introduce PC-exclusive content such as mods and user-generated quests.

I’d like to release the game on PC as a technical attempt," he said. "I want to show PC usersFinal Fantasy XVrunning on high-end machines, and we personally would like to see it, too. Also, I would like to try developing on PC to pursue a unique way of playing with PC-exclusive features like making your own quests and enjoying the world using things like mods.”

Tabata has spoken about bringing the game to PC before. In April 2016, he said that the team weren’t able to do simultaneous PC and consoles version of the game, but that he’d also "take a good, hard look at PC" after the game had launched on PS4 and Xbox One.

He then said a month before the game’s launch that a PC version of Final Fantasy XV may take over a year to complete as he wanted to make a "better version" of the game than the existing console release. Either way, it’s clear a PC release of Final Fantasy XV isn’t going to be released any time soon.

Tabata also spoke about how the game’s been performing digitally, revealing that it’s sold more digital copies than is usual for a Square Enix title.

Based on the company’s average, there have been a whole lot of sales of the digital version," he said. "We’ve seen good numbers not only in Japan, but also in North America and Europe, so we’re happy about it.”

Meanwhile, development on Final Fantasy XV’s virtual reality segment is also progressing, but Tabata said the team "haven’t progressed to the point where we can say specifically when it will be released."

The Final Fantasy XV VR Experience was first announced at E3 2016, and will see players controlling Prompto in a kind of shooter-like mini-game for PSVR. The experience wasn’t given a release date at the time, but PS4 players will eventually be able to download it as DLC once it finally gets released.

In the more immediate future, Tabata and his team are still working on implementing Final Fantasy XV’s big story update for its notorious Chapter 13 section.
