Prey release date confirmed for May 5th 2017

Bethesda has announced that its upcoming first-person sci-fi action game Prey will be released on May 5th 2017 on PS4, Xbox One and PC. Those who pre-order the game will also receive a special bonus in the form of the Cosmonaut Shotgun Pack.

This exclusive pre-order bonus contains a special Margrave shotgun that’s been passed down through lead protagonist Morgan Yu’s family as well as a special tool pack to help him fight against the threats that lurk aboard the Talos I. These include three Neuromods, which players can spend to acquire new abilities, two medkits, a Fabrication plan to create more ammo and the shotgun itself, and a starter kit for building tools and weapons.

Developed by Arkane Studios, the outfit responsible for last year’s Dishonored 2, Prey sees players trying to survive against hostile alien monsters on an abandoned space station known as Talos I. With the lead character having been part of a scientific experiment meant to further human evolution, players must use their unique powers and weapons to find out what happened on Talos I as well as uncover some dark secrets relating to their own past.

Prey was officially unveiled at E3 2016 and it quickly became one of the most-talked-about games of the show. Prey 2 had been planned and announced previously in 2014, but the game was eventually cancelled. Arkane then revived the project as its own standalone title that has little to do with the 2006 original.

First of all, we absolutely looked at a whole host of other options, with perhaps calling it something else,” Bethesda’sPR and marketing chief Pete Hinestold MCV at the time. We ended up on Prey because it fit the tone of the vibe of the thing that they are making. We didn’t tell the team that they had to have a portal gun or the same characters or stuff like that, so they were good with it.

For folks who may have played the original Prey a decade ago, they’re going to have to take this new one in and of itself, and not hold on to anything from the previous game. If you don’t know what Prey is, then it doesn’t matter. It is a cool name that captures the essence of what they’re making.

To celebrate, Bethesda has released a brand-new gameplay trailer. Have a watch below:
