PS4 hits 40m; PSN made more money than Nintendo last year

Sony has revealed that it sold 17.7m PS4 consoles in its last financial year.

That number was better than forecast and represents PS4’s best year yet.

That brings total sell in for the machine to 40m units, Twitter’s ZhugeEX calculates. At the same stage in its lifecycle, the PS2 had sold 33.2m units (while PS3 stood at 22.7m and the PSOne 13.5m).

The most recent Xbox One sales estimate pegged sell in at 18m units, meaning PS4 is now extending its lead over Microsoft’s machine.

In the same period, Nintendo sold just 3.26m Wii U units, total sales of which have now hit 12.8m units.

Revenues from PSN alone hit $4.9bn for the year – that’s more than Nintendo’s total company revenue for the same period. PlayStation profits reached $786m.

Sony’s Games & Network Services enjoyed an 11.8 per cent revenue jump, too.

Sony's PlayStation Network sales hit 529,000m yen which means that PSN generated more revenue than the whole of Nintendo (504,000m yen).

Yes, you're reading that right. PSN generated more revenue than all Nintendo revenue in FY2015/16.
