PS4 topped US hardware sales once again in August

NPD data has shown yet another monthly sales victory for the PS4 in America.

VentureBeat reports that Sony says that its console outsold Xbox One in August, just as it has done in every month bar one – April – throughout 2015. It also shifted the most software.

We would like to thank our fans and partners for their ongoing support of PlayStation and for making PS4 the top-selling console and No. 1 in software sales in North America in August,” Sony said.

We continue to demonstrate our commitment to delivering the best content line-up with the launch of first-party exclusives like Until Dawn and third-party titles like Madden NFL 16, which sold more on PS4 than any other platform.

In August we also saw the most successful beta in PS4 history with Call of Duty: Black Ops III, marking a significant milestone in our new partnership with Activision. We look forward to furthering momentum with the launch of Destiny: The Taken King next week.”

Microsoft, however, stated that despite another monthly defeat, Xbox One sales were up 26 per cent year-on-year. Nintendo did not comment on Wii U sales, but did tell GameSpot that 3DS sales are up 30 per cent year-on-year so far in 2015.

The overall hardware market was down two per cent at $190.5m

PS4’s success comes despite Sony’s relatively soft first party software line-up. However, it seems that the machine has become the go-to option for third party release. Metal Gear Solid V, for instance, saw 72 per cent of its week one UK copies snapped up by PS4 owners.
