Riot sues alleged League of Legends clone developer

The maker behind League of Legends is taking a mobile game developer to court having accused it of appropriating from the smash hit MOBA.

Slingshot reports that Riot is suing Shanghai Moontown Technology for alleged copyright infringement.

Three games are specifically mentioned – Magic Rush: Heroes, Mobile Legends: 5v5 MOBA and Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (pictured) – which Riot argues have a vast array of elements that were directly and deliberately appropriated from LoL, including but not limited to LoL’s characters, artwork, map designs, and unit and monster designs”.

Moontown is also accused of overt gamesmanship” after making minor changes to the titles after being initially approached. It is even alleged that the company removed one of its titles from the Google Play Store after a complaint was made, only to re-upload a virtually identical game with a different name shortly after.

Moontown, however, has come out fighting – and also spared time for a dig at the media, to which it saw fit to issue a thinly veiled threat. That’s never a good look.

Recently, some media have published negative and unreal reports against Mobile Legends. Here is the statement of Moontoon,” it said. Mobile Legends is a MOBA game that is developed by Moontoon independently, and its copyright has already been registered and protected in multiple countries all over the world. Moontoon has independent intellectual property rights.

Mobile Legends and all of the users will not be affected by these unreal reports and we will keep providing the best gameplay experience to players all over the world.

Meanwhile, for some media and competitors who have spread the unreal information and rumours against us, we reserve the right to protect ourselves and pursue legal actions.”
