Sony is already selling the PlayStation VR at a profit

According to Sony’s Shawn Layden the company is already selling PlayStation VR units at a profit.

The chairman of Worldwide Studios at Sony Interactive Entertainment and president of Sony Interactive Entertainment America revealed the news when speaking to Polygon about the PSVR’s launch this week.

"We’re making money on the VR console," said Layden.

The news comes as PSVR launched earlier this week, and has seemed to have gone down well. Stock is reasonably hard to find, with Amazon not being able to fulfil orders until mid November at the time of writing.

As you would expect with the launch of a new piece of hardware there has been a lot of surprising discoveries around the PSVR. First off there was the news that it may not work with bright light or shiny surfaces near by, and earlier today it was discovered that you can play Xbox One games with the headset.

This is not the first time that Sony has made a profit on a console at an early stage. Despite years of selling devices for a loss it was revealed in 2014 that the PS4 was being sold for a profit. Microsoft also announced that the same was true for the Xbox One in 2013. It will be interesting to find out if both the PS4 Pro and Project Scorpio follow this trend of making a profit on hardware from day one.
