The Nanyang Dota 2 Cruise Cup will be held on a boat in the middle of the ocean

The Nanyang Cruise Cup will be the first ever Dota 2 tournament played on a cruise ship.

Between October 13th and 17th four of the best Chinese Dota 2 teams, including TI 6 champions Wings Gaming and TI 4 champions Newbee, will play on board the Sapphire Princess cruise ship. Around $45,000 will be up for grabs, with the final two teams being decided in online qualifiers.

Obviously finding a stable internet connection out in the middle of the ocean isn’t easy, so the event organisers will be renting a satellite to provide an internet connection. However people have been quick to point out that this could result in higher latency for the players and could present issues when trying to send out a HD quality live stream across the world.

Further adding to people’s concerns is the history of the Nanyang events. Neither of the two previous LAN events, which were on dry land for what it is worth, went particularly smoothly, with many tech issues. The company behind the event was also involved with the disastrous Shanghai Major earlier this year.

While this sounds like a fun idea, it seems quite impractical and will probably create more issues than the novelty value provides.
