Uncharted helps PS4 hold No.1 spot for May in US

PlayStation 4 was once again the best-selling hardware in the US thanks to Uncharted 4, according to data from NPD.

As reported by GamesBeat, the PS4-exclusive was the best-selling game for the month, ahead of Bethesda’s Doom.

Though Sony’s title was No.1 game of the month, NPD reports that Blizzard’s Overwatch was in fact the fastest-selling title of May. The firm claims that Overwatch is selling at twice the pace of Uncharted 4.

New launches were a major driver of the growth seen in May 2016 compared to May 2015,” NPD’s Liam Callahan said.

Collectively, May 2016 new launches sold nearly double in unit sales and 108 per cent more in dollars as new launches last May. These May 2016 launches represented 51 percent of overall new physical software sales for the month.”

Though Sony saw superior hardware sales, Microsoft claimed a higher level of player engagement.

In May 2016, gaming hours on Xbox One more than doubled compared to last year, driven by the launches of Overwatch and Doom as well as the addition of Call of Duty: Black Ops to the catalog of Xbox 360 titles playable on Xbox One,” Xbox VP of marketing Mike Nichols told GamesBeat.

In total, consumer spending shot to $528.6m for the month – $137.7m was on hardware (a ten per cent decline); software comprised of $241.9m (an 18 per cent rise) and $149m for accessories (dip of two per cent).

Here is the US physical software Top Ten for May:
