US PS4 and Xbox One install base up 60% on last-gen

Hardware sales may be down year-on-year in the US in January, but PS4 and Xbox One are already tracking far ahead of their predecessors in the US.

NPD says that the combined install base of the latest consoles is 60 per cent higher than the cumulative hardware total enjoyed by PS3 and Xbox 360 at the same point in their lifecycles.

PS4 was the best selling individual platform in the US in January, reversing Xbox One’s end of 2014 lead and remaining the cumulative next-gen sales leader, according to Sony. Xbox One had its best January yet, nonetheless, with Microsoft adding that the machine sold more game sales per console than any other platform”.

Overall hardware sales were down 23 per cent year-on-year, however, with PS4 and Xbox One down 22 per cent and their predecessors 35 per cent.

Software was up six per cent from $223.2m in January 2014 to $233.7m while accessories climbed slightly to $204.6m. Overall the market fell five per cent to $625.7m.

Dying Light was the month’s best-selling game, recording the best first month sales for a new survival horror IP in the region.

The sales of January 2015 launch titles were up over 200 per cent versus January 2014, with Dying Light being the major new release of the month,” NPD said. If January 2015 releases performed in line with January 2014 releases, overall software sales would have decreased by four per cent.”

1. Dying Light (Warner Bros)
2. Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare (Activision)
3. Grand Theft Auto V (Rockstar)
4. Minecraft (Microsoft/Sony)
