World Video Game Hall of Fame inaugural class includes Super Mario, Doom

A selection of six video games have been chosen as the first class to be inducted into the World Video Game Hall of Fame at The Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, New York.

The titles include Pong, Pac-Man, Tetris, Super Mario Bros., Doom and World of Warcraft. The six were picked from a list of fifteen that boasted games such as The Legend of Zelda, Minecraft, The Oregon Trail, Space Invaders, Sonic the Hedgehog, Angry Birds, The Sims, Pokmon and FIFA.

Nominations were initially open to the public, with final selections voted on by a committee that included many industry journalists and scholars. Criteria for the selections like the game’s icon status, longevity, geographical reach – as well as ts influence on other designers, games and society overall – were all taken into account by the panel of judges.

The inductees will remain on permanent view in the museum’s eGameRevolution exhibit. Nominations for next year’s will be accepted through March 31st, 2016.
