American Express unveils line of League of Legends credit cards

Financial services firm American Express has announced a new line of credit cards featuring scenes and characters from League of Legends.

American Express informed The New York Times of the partnership with Riot Games regarding its hugely popular MOBA title – a move that was motivated by LoL’s player base topping 32m that logs a staggering one billion hours of game play a month.”

American Express general manager for online and mobile in the United States Stefan Happ told The New York Times that [The partnership was established to] expand our traditional reach beyond the mass affluent," American Express US general manager for online and mobile Stefan Happ said.

"[The stats give] you a sense of how deeply engaged the players are in playing this game. We are about loyalty, we are about contact and long-lasting engagement. This is an ideal fit from an audience perspective."

Polygon further reports that the partnership includes a line of prepaid debit cards that reward cardholders with Riot Points – in-game League of Legends currency – for making real purchases.

Cardholders will get 1,000 Riot Points for signing up, and can pickup 1,000 Points on top of that for adding $20 to the card. Another 1,000 Points will be earned following the first 10 purchases.

Those who link their card to a checking account will be rewarded 10,000 Points, and users can earn additional points for every dollar spent after linking an account. Once linked, the card continues to work like a regular debit card.

The cards, along with a dedicated website explaining the new line, launches this Wednesday.
