Razer nabs majority of THX assets and all of its staff for undisclosed sum

Razer acquires movie sound giants THX

Not content with a range of PC’s and light up computer peripherals, video game hardware manufacturer Razer has acquired audio company THX, the audio technology company whose audio sting played before most of your favourite movies in the 80’s and 90’s.

THX is best known for being founded by George Lucas in 1983, although it was spun out of Lucasfilm into its own company in 2002 and sold to Creative Labs, who were the majority shareholders until Razer acquired it this year.

Razer is buying up pretty much everything THX branded for an undisclosed sum, with the entirety of THX’s staff and the majority of its assets included in the deal. although in a Medium post, THX CEO Ty Ahmad-Taylor claims that THX will continue to operate separately, certifying audio equipment and working with big names in cinema and entertainment. It’s just that they’ll also now have access to all of Razer’s resources and patents too.

For Razer, the deal is a sweet one. They’ve just bought their way into the audio-visual market in a big way, and while the specifics of how things will operate in the future aren’t known yet.

Video game hardware maker Razer has evidently acquired THX, the audio tech company that’s best known for the cavity-rumbling sound which accompanied its logo appearing before the lion’s share of movies in U.S. theaters during the ’80s and ’90s.

Razer also produce their own range of audio headsets, in addition to its own branded VR headset, the (OS)VR. Expect to see THX’s involvement with these projects in the coming months.
