Puzzle platformer received boost from discounts and promotions

Thomas Was Alone breaks 1m copies

Thomas Was Alone, the indie platforming game from Mike Bithell, has surpassed one million copies, according to the developer.

“Ummm.. so… yeah.. Thomas Was Alone has now sold over one million copies,” Bithell tweeted.

“Not bad for a crappy little flash game.”

Released in July 2012 for the PC and Mac, Thomas Was Alone tells the tale of sentient life emerging inside a computer system represented by polygons and narrated by comedian Danny Wallace. These shapes then navigate the shifting geometry of game world as the player traverses gaps and solves puzzles.

Bithell added that the bulk of the game’s sales were in bundles, discounts or promotions, such as the Humble Bundle. “So stop your 1mil x $10 maths right now,” he added.

Thomas Was Alone took home the prize for Use of Narrative at the Develop Awards 2013.

The game has since been brought to the PS3, PS Vita and Linux.

Bithell’s next game is the 3D action title Volume, which he is currently developing for the PS4.
