The Next Generation Portable hardware itself may be technically very impressive, but arguably the biggest news to emerge from Tokyo this morning is that of Sony’s new PlayStation Suite.
The new software platform will not only power the content delivery for the NGP, but will also bring PlayStation gaming to all Android devices. It also answers the question of where Sony Ericsson’s new PlayStation-branded Xperia device fits into the mix.
It’s the first time Sony has offered official PlayStation content through an open OS platform. A ‘PlayStation Certified’ licence program will govern the suitability of Android hardware, as well as offering development support and logo licensing. Potentially, all compatible Android phones could in future carry the PlayStation symbol.
Launching this year, the PlayStation Suite will allow Android users to play PSone titles. Obviously the range of software available for NGP will be vastly wider, with a host of dedicated titles such as Uncharted and Metal Gear Solid already announced.
"In the dramatically evolving and diversifying mobile market, the number of users who enjoy games casually on a variety of devices including mobile phones, smart-phones and tablet PCs, has been increasing significantly," a company statements reads.
"By offering ‘PlayStation quality’ content to this rapidly growing market, SCE will not only deliver the PlayStation experience to a wider base of users around the globe, but will also be able to offer game developers and publishers the potential to further expand their business opportunities to these devices."
PlayStation Suite will be compatible with Android 2.3 and above.
