GameStop says the closure of its Northern Ireland stores is merely part of its already announced plan to exit the UK brick and mortar market.
GameStop Group’s commercial director Michael Finucane, who oversees the business in the UK and Ireland, this morning told MCV that shutting three stores this week is just another step towards a more online-focused offering for UK.
And GameStop’s much bigger Republic of Ireland chain of stores is unaffected by the news.
Last year we confirmed that the global games retail giant was opting to serve UK consumers through its new co.uk and cutting its stores in the territory.
Finucane today told us: "The recent store closures in Northern Ireland are part of our plan, announced six months ago, to exit the UK market from a brick and mortar perspective.
"We started this process last year closing our Birmingham, Stockport and Belfast locations.
He added: "The stores in the Republic of Ireland are not affected at this time.
"Correspondingly, we have experienced tremendous sales growth on our UK ecommerce site www.gamestop.co.uk.
"Our go forward plan is to serve the UK market with enhanced digital and online offerings."
