Nintendo boasts huge Wii U network functionality

Nintendo America president Reggie Fils-Aime has said that the online capabilities of the Wii U console will give its console rivals some stiff competition.

Speaking to GameTrailers, Fils-Aime claimed the new platform would have “all of that type of capability built in.”

Considering the muted history of WiiWare, the online service for the Wii console that struggled in the wake of Xbox Live and PSN, the new service could represent an important part of Nintendo’s Wii U strategy going forward.

Asked about the level to which third-party users will be able to manipulate the new network, Fils-Aime described a cherry picking approach to its development that he believed had produced a flexible service.

"Our approach will be a flexible one,” he said.

“Literally taking the best of what each of our third party partners has to offer, marrying that with the best of what Nintendo does, and bringing that versus a more rigid, a more closed type of environment."
