Nintendo NX will launch in March 2017, no appearance at E3

Nintendo’s next home console will arrive at the start of next year.

After months of speculation over the mysterious machine, codenamed ‘NX’, the company has confirmed in its latest financials that the box will release in March 2017.

However, Nintendo remain tight-lipped on details, saying that the NX wouldn’t make an appearance at E3 in June and would instead be unveiled “later this year”.

What will be at E3, however, is the next Legend of Zelda game. Highly anticipated and long delayed, the untitled instalment was revealed to set for release in 2017, with a playable demo at the show this summer. Zelda is said to serve as the “focus of Nintendo’s presence at E3”.

Nintendo confirmed – as many have speculated – that the title will launch simultaneously for NX and Wii U, having been in development for both platforms. 2006’s The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess similarly released for Wii and GameCube at the same time.

Elsewhere, Nintendo revealed that its first mobile game, Miitomo, now has more than 10 million users, having launched in mid-March.

The company announced that its next two games for smartphones and tablets will be based on Fire Emblem and Animal Crossing, and will be released this autumn.

The Animal Crossing title will connect with its console brethren, while the Fire Emblem game is described as being “more accessible” than its full-blooded counterparts.

Both upcoming apps are said to be “pure game applications” compared to Miitomo’s social focus.
