Nintendo Switch is now the fastest selling console in the US

Nintendo revealed yesterday that it has sold 1.5m Switch units in December in the US, according to NPD Group’s figures for the year – which has yet to release its full report. Nintendo’s console has now sold a grand total of 4.8m units in the country, making it the fastest-selling home console in US history.

NPD Group also reported that the Nintendo 3DS continued to have strong sales, with December 2017 being its best selling month since December 2014. The Nintendo 3DS family of hardware has sold over 750,000 units last December, which represented a 27 per cent increase year-on-year. Lifetime US sales for the 3DS has now reached 21m units.

As a result, combined sales for Switch, 3DS and Nintendo’s SNES Mini hit 2.6m units in December, which was more than half of all hardware sold in December in the US. That means the SNES MIni sold 350,000 units during that month.

Meanwhile, on the software side, four Nintendo titles made it to the December charts in the US: Super Mario Odyssey charted at No.3, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe made it to No.4, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild landed at No.9 and Splatoon 2 charted at No.16. 3DS exclusives Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon also respectively landed at No.13 and No.14.
