NPD: DS dominates hardware market

Amidst the gloom of yet more annual falls in the US video games market, hardware sales for June were better than expected hitting $1.7m – NPD had expected that number to be around $1.55m.

As always, Nintendo’s machines were the star performers with DS shifting 766,500 units and the Wii 361,000.

Hot on their heels, however, was Microsoft’s Xbox 360. It’s 240,600 sales make it the only console to better the numbers it shifted in June 2008 – a very impressive feat considering the current financial climate.

PS3 just pipped PSP to the title of best-selling PlayStation console, with the home console shifting 164,700 units and the handheld 163,500. The PS2 wasn’t far behind, however, with strong sales of 152,700 units.
